Sponsored Posts.... for better or for worse?

Sponsored Posts.... for better or for worse?

by Eleni Lambis

Let’s talk about re-hash of old hack - sponsored posts in the newsfeed section of facebook. Twitter had it, canned it, re-introduced it and now Face Book will cash in on it.

Twitter  bannned third party ad networks in May 2010, only to re-introduce some time later it as a way for Twitter to make money. Each third party ad network offers a different spin on the same basic business model: you sign up as a sponsored tweeter, and based on the number of people who follow you, you are assigned a price for referring to various advertisers in your tweets.

Facebook’s version goes a little something like this, sponsored stories will be in the newsfeed section. Unlike a traditional ad we won’t see a banner or box intruding ( so to speak ). The idea, from Mike Hoefflinger, director of global business marketing is about ‘evolving’ marketing on Facebook, ads work he says but stories are more effective. For more on this go to here

So the main difference is an ad is specifically tailored by the advertiser/business to communicate a targeted message to customers. Sponsored stories are ads that include existing posts and activity that mention the business and could also have material about page likes, page posts, check-ins, apps and games played.

Are we already saturated with the ads & disguising them as stories won’t help? Or will we consumers ‘evolving’, as Mike Hoefflinger from Facebook suggests and respond better to sponsored stories?.

What do we think people?
